(Not necessarily a Christmas dish, but very French!)
Soupe À L'Oignon
(Onion Soup)
You will Need:
1 pound yellow onions, sliced
1/4 cup butter
2 tablespoons flour
4 cups water
5 beef bouillon cubes or the equivalent in vegetarian beef broth
French bread, sliced and toasted
parmesan cheese
Step One - Sauté onions in butter. Add flour. Brown flour slightly.
Step Two - Add bouillon and water. Simmer soup 15 minutes.
Step Three - Ladle soup into ovenproof bowls. Top with bread and a sprinkle of cheese.
Step Four - Broil until cheese is light brown. Enjoy!
Making a real Bûche de Noël can be a little complicated for young children.
Here is a much simpler idea.
You will Need:
Individual size rolled cakes (like Ho-Hos)
can of chocolate frosting
stick of butter
powdered sugar
Step One - Secure a cake to a plate with a dab of frosting. Cut a second cake into fourths. With frosting, secure one cut piece to the bigger cake to resemble a log stump.
Step Two - Frost the whole cake with the chocolate frosting and make marks on the frosting to resemble bark.
Step Three - Soften the butter. Add enough powdered sugar to make a clay. Use this clay to make little mushrooms to decorate your cake.
Step Four - Enjoy!
